We hold a wide range of historical records relating to the county of Anglesey, which are available for research. So, whether your interest lies in local history or family history, our staff is here to help you to find out more about your local area or community.
What are archives?
Archives are the records of official bodies, companies, societies and individuals which have been identified as being worthy of permanent preservation. They were not created specifically to meet the needs of researchers, but if studied carefully they can be used to answer many questions about the period in which they were produced.
What sort of archives do we have?
The Anglesey Archive Service holds documents dating from the sixteenth century to the present day. The most popular types of material relating to Anglesey include:
- census returns
- parish records
- records of non conformists
- land tax records
- maps
- photographs
- records of local government
- education records
- crew lists
- newspapers
Lists of catalogues, newspapers, parish registers and chapels are published at the bottom of this page as PDF files.

Volunteers and work experience
We always welcome applications from people who would like to help us with our projects. We also offer work experience placements to school students over 14 years of age and to undergraduates and postgraduates considering a career in archives or records management. However, as space is limited we can only take a small number of volunteers at a time.
If you would like to apply please contact: Anne Venables on 01248 752080 or email archives@anglesey.gov.uk
