The Isle of Anglesey County Council, Medrwn Môn and Menter Môn are committed to working in partnership to support the island’s most vulnerable during to Coronavirus outbreak.
Senior officers from each organisation met yesterday (Monday, March 16) and agreed to take collaborative action that will provide support and guidance to volunteer groups that want to help those in need and who will have to self-isolate.
Anglesey County Council’s Chief Executive, Mrs Annwen Morgan said, “This is a critical time for everyone and it is important that people and communities look after each other. With the over 70s and those with chronic health conditions being advised to self-isolate for long periods, we have taken special measures with our partners to take action that will help those in need.”
“There have already been two confirmed cases on the island and we are fully aware that residents are concerned. As an authority, we are doing all we can to ensure that services are maintained during this period. However, we are likely to face significant additional pressures over the next few months and we will also be seeking the support of our Town and Community Councils as well as communities during this time.”
The County Council, in partnership with Medrwn Môn and Menter Môn, will work together with local communities and volunteers to ensure the most vulnerable are supported, identify what community support is already available and map the potential demand the Island faces.
The aim of this will be to create a guidance document for any individual/volunteer, community group or Town and Community Council that would like to provide assistance during this period. Offering guidance to those wanting to help, setting out realistic targets and outlining precautionary measures that will safeguard everyone involved.
The county council is following Public Health Wales’ advice and guidelines and is taking regular action in response to the daily changes. The UK has now moved into the ‘delay’ phase to try and manage the spread of the virus, encouraging people to wash their hands more often, and for anyone who has a high temperature or a new continuous cough to stay at home for 14 days.
Menter Môn’s Managing Director, Dafydd Gruffydd said, “During times like this it is important that Menter Môn reacts to the emergency that the island faces. We have staff, skills and resources and will be working together with others to ensure these are put into action for the benefit of our communities.”
Annwen added, “We are strongly advising everyone to take extra care. Our aim now is to ensure that support is there for the most vulnerable on the island. Community resilience is vital and everyone has a role to play to protect each other. Our goal is to ensure that we provide the right tools for our communities that will enable them to help those in need.”
“We aim to have the community support plan in place as soon as possible in order to allow communities to provide consistent support throughout the island. This is a challenging period for us all and I’d like to thank those community groups such as the ones in Amlwch, Cemaes, Menai Bridge, Holyhead and Llanfairpwll who have already established in order to help the community.”
