Get Involved with Adult Learners’ Week!

Posted on 12 June 2019

Adults of all ages are encouraged to try their hand at various educational activities during Adult Learners’ Week (June 17-23).

The week-long event is an annual celebration of the variety of educational opportunities available within the community. It gives adults a chance to try their hand at something new and different.

This year’s themes are the history and archaeology of Anglesey. If you’re over 16 - why not join in and get involved with some of the activities being offered locally.

Activities on offer include a visit to Oriel Môn, Llangefni for an insight into the interpretation of archaeological artefacts in its archaeological exhibition.

Creative workshops are also on offer throughout the week, where you can create a mosaic and graffiti. Come along and show your creative flair - and be inspired by patterns of the Neolithic age!

There are also various volunteering opportunities throughout the week at Bryn Celli Ddu burial chamber, Llanddaniel, where you can take part in an archaeological excavation with CADW.

Another activity organised comes from Wici Môn; a web-based project which creates Welsh-medium articles cataloguing information about Anglesey’s history and culture.

If you know any interesting facts or stories about the Island, your village or parish, you are encouraged to come along and share them with the pupils at Ysgol Rhyd Y Llan (Llanfaethlu). The children will then show you how to upload the information onto the web!

Anglesey’s Community Librarian, Bethan Hughes-Jones, explained, “Adult Learners’ Week is aimed at encouraging more people to take their first step back into learning. The week also represents a celebration of the growing number of adults in Wales who have enriched their lives and improved their personal prospects through education and training.”

Education portfolio holder, Councillor Meirion Jones, added, “No-one is ever too old to set out on a new learning journey. Lifelong learning is vital in terms of continued personal development and new opportunities should be grasped when they arise.”

“Further education and greater knowledge can open a number of doors at any stage of a person’s life and I would encourage interested adults to attend these interesting events or contact us for more information."
