Foundation Phase pupils will stay home this week as Anglesey’s Coronavirus infection rate becomes the highest in Wales.
The Island’s infection rate today (Monday, February 22) stands at 112.8 per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the Welsh average (80 per 100,000).
The decision has been made to delay the return of Foundation Phase pupils until next week – to see if infection rates drop over the next seven days.
Anglesey Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi said, “Today, Ynys Môn sadly has the highest Coronavirus infection rate in Wales.”
“Parents, school staff and our communities are rightly concerned about the real threat posed by Coronavirus. Given the high infection rate here, we will continue to take all reasonable steps to protect the health of pupils, school staff and wider communities.”
Cllr Medi added, “Earlier this month, I promised that we would do what was best for our schools. It is vital that we get things right in respect of our children and their return to the classroom. We have therefore taken the decision to pause the process this week to see if infection rates drop. If this happens, we hope to be in a position to welcome pupils back to their classrooms from early next week.”
Anglesey schools are now planning for a phased return of pupils from Monday, March 1st.
Education portfolio holder, Cllr Meirion Jones, added, “We will continue to review the Island’s infection rate on a daily basis and keep in regular dialogue with our schools. Schools will, of course, be keeping parents updated of arrangements and distance learning will continue until we can welcome pupils back.”
“Following Welsh Government rules and guidance is key. Our actions and behaviours will determine the rate of Coronavirus transmission on Anglesey. It's vital we drive cases down to allow our schools to reopen as soon as possible.”
